In this economy, almost all of us are being affected by the horrors of the recession, all thanks to our good friend, George W. Bush. I graduated high school in 2007, the year the economy took the biggest decline of this generation. I, along with many others attended college shortly after graduation, and we all thought that things would look up by the time we finished our schooling. Well, here it is almost 3 years later, some of us have graduated like I have, others are still in class, and quite a few just decided to drop out. And look at what we still have — people losing their jobs for no reason, many unable to collect unemployment, and thousands of business who are just too afraid to hire anyone at all. I do believe things will look up soon, but honestly, soon is nowhere near good enough for many of us out there. So what is a poor man to do in a time like this? Simple, create your own job.
Now before I start, I am in no way marketing you any get rich quick schemes. I am simply giving you a little advice on how you mat possibly make a few bucks just by doing what you like to do. Another disclaimer, I can almost guarantee that you will not see a whole lot of money in the beginning. That being said, let’s get down to it.
My story
I graduated college with an associate’s degree in multimedia graphic design, and knew that the only place for me going out was to start my own business. During my last couple terms in school I began my company, Roshambo Industries. At first things seemed like they were going great, I had a few freelance jobs, I was making a little bit of money, but the sad part was, work was certainly not steady. I soon joined a few freelance sites to bid on jobs that people wanted done. I won a couple, I lost a couple (mostly to off-shoring companies who undercut me horribly, that being said, I was probably just on the wrong freelance sites). At this point, I was just sick of finding work like this, and I had already tried finding a few clients in the area, which was definitely a bad idea as I ran into a lot of idiots who didn’t think thew should have to pay more than $10 for a website (this only specifically happened once, other times it was a little higher. If you want to see some examples of some of these idiots, check craigslist.), and some who just didn’t pay me at all. After all of this I decided that I needed some help, and met a few people who were willing to chip in a little here and there in order for us to start doing something right. It’s taken a while, but things are finally beginning to move at a steady rate. Even though, we have made some money, it certainly hasn’t been enough.
Someone once told me, “Ryan, entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.” Ever since I heard that I’ve been telling myself that I’m going to seriously make this happen, even if I fail a few times, and even if I have to start doing something else, I’ll make it.
So things start finally coming together and I get a little free time every once in a while. I then decide I need to start doing something to pass the time, all while making a little extra money. It was at that point that i decided that I should start blogging my ideas on not only this topic of business, and design, but pretty much all the things that I care about.
And this is where the story ends, and also where begins my advice on how you can do what you love, and still make money by doing it.
But that is also where I leave you at for today, my children. I will continue this tomorrow in part 2, and then you might actually learn a thing or two as I have in the past few months.
Take care everyone.
